The month of October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. This month reminds us of our devotion to family Rosary. The devotion to the Rosary has been dear to us. This devotion had been entrusted to our forefathers when they accepted Christian religion. The Dominican missionaries were one of the pioneers religious to Goa. When Goa was conquered by the Portuguese the Dominicans the great devotees of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary propagated the devotion of the family Rosary. When Europe was getting succumbed to heretics and Muslims, St Dominic had recourse to Mother Mary through the devotion of Rosary. He attributed the victory at Lepanto on 7 October 1571 to Our Lady of Rosary. Though there was a feast, the same was extended to the universal Church by Pope Clement XI in the year 1716. Our families were so much devoted to the family Rosary that they considered as an obligation to recite Rosary in the family and sing hymns of Mother Mary after the family Rosary. Since the meditation for each day in a book form was available in Konkani, every day a meditation was read both in the church and in the families. The Rosary devotion reminds us of our redemption by Our Lord. According to St John Paul II while reciting the Rosary we contemplate the face of Jesus with Mother Mary. We pray to Mother Mary to intercede for us now and at the hour of our death. The Church has granted plenary indulgence to the faithful reciting five decades of the Rosary in Church, as a family at home, as a religious community or as a pious fraternity or in general wherever several persons have gathered together for a good purpose and in other circumstances a partial indulgence. The Pastors are requested to explain to the faithful the importance of Rosary and its nature.

Our families are united in prayer only. We may come home to eat and drink and rest. But the prayer unites all members of the family sitting together before the altar and recite the decades of Rosary. In some families, this devotion is slowly vanishing. If this family devotion disappears what else would bind us together? It is our duty and responsibility as Pastors to insist on faithful to recite daily family Rosary. This should be part of the family in its daily routine. This year we have to pray specially for the Synod which is going to takeplace in Rome from 4 - 25 October 2015. The Synod seems to be of greater importance. It is on family. The family is the heart of the human society. We are fully aware of the situation of the family today. The Holy Father is expected to give a direction to the universal church and world at large to safeguard the sanctity of the family. Let us earnestly pray for the success of the Synod. There are some rumours how some militant groups are fighting against the mission of Our Pope. Let us pray for our Pope. Let us recite in our clergy and religious houses and in families the daily Rosary and offer it for the intentions of our Pope. I exhort everyone to recite more Rosaries and pray for the families in the world.

Our Cathedral is dedicated to Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary. October 7, is the feast. Let us remember the Mother church and pray for the intensions of the entire Diocese.

November 1 is on Sunday. This is the solemnity of all Saints. In the evening, at Vespers we begin to pray for the Souls in purgatory. On 2 November the liturgy is of all souls, as found in the Ordo. Please read the instructions given in the Ordo page No.148. The Priests are permitted to celebrate 3 masses – only
one stipend is drawn. Please encourage the faithful to offer Mass intentions for the departed souls of the family and souls in purgatory. The intentions thus received may please be sent to the Procurator of the Diocese. They are offered either in the Diocese by our priests or other Dioceses in need. The 18 October is the mission Sunday. When our Churches and institutions in need are receiving assistance from the Holy See, it is our responsibility to contribute for the missions and help the missions of the Church. Please remind the people to make sacrifices and offer prayers for the missions. Let us pray to our Mother Mary to bless all of us and specially our family. I thank every one of you who are making efforts to help the mission work undertaken in Africa, Same Diocese. May God bless you.
