May 4, 2017: Canara Organisation for Development and Peace (CODP) celebrated International Workers Day or May Day on 30.04.2017 at CODP hall, Nanthoor.  The programme began with prayer by members of SHG.  Fr. Jagadish Pinto, Director of Gladsom home, welcomed the dignitaries on the dais.

The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Ivan D Souza, MLC, Mangaluru.  In his inaugural speech he said that there are various laws and regulations for construction workers. He also explained the ways and means to fight for the rights and benefits of workers. He stated that for all this they had long deliberations in Vidana Parishath.  As a result of this discussion the government has come up with a scheme for construction workers and an office building in Mangaluru.  He greeted all the workers on International Workers day and distributed the ID cards to Construction Workers.






Fr. Oswald Monteiro, Director of CODP said that “Work is Worship”.  Nearly 93% of workers in India are in unorganized sector.  They do not have social security schemes. Therefore government has come up with various schemes for unorganized workers among which construction workers scheme is of importance.  To get all these government schemes, CODP is trying its best through various ways like giving awareness to workers etc.  

Mr. Ganapathi Hegde, officer from labour department explained about various construction workers schemes, how to avail these schemes and what all documents required.

Mr. Ravi Kumar Crasta, Coordinator of CODP, compeered the programme.  Mrs. Chandra Kala, Animator of CODP proposed the vote of thanks.  All together 80 members participated in the programme.
