Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The heavy loss that has occurred due to the floods in Kerala and Karnataka has shaken all of us while thousands of our citizens have been rendered homeless. We feel helpless at this nature’s fury and pray to the Lord of nature to bring soon back everything to normalcy.

The Church in Mangalore has risen to the occasion and has done everything possible to help our brothers and sisters in distress. We have earmarked a Sunday collection of 19th August 2018, in the entire diocese, encouraged individuals and institutions to contribute and a concerted effort has been made to reach out to the needy. Many of our parishes are involved in various relief works along with several organizations. Our efforts will continue till we try to put in our optimum efforts to relieve the pain of the affected people.

All this has come at a time when we are earnestly preparing for the Episcopal ordination of Rev.Msgr. Peter Paul Saldanha, who will be installed as the Bishop of Mangalore on the 15 of the September 2018. Though the natural calamity has dampened our spirit, still we look up to the Lord of Hope who will always renew us with his strength to go ahead and prepare for the celebration.

In this context, there are several comments in the social media which has raised some issues with regard to the Episcopal celebration. Some have even suggested to skip the meal in the afternoon so that the money saved may be sent to those affected by incessant rains.

At this point, we would like to clarify that the ordination celebration will not have any extravaganza. The celebration is a matter of the spirit and therefore we could rejoice in the Spirit in spite of not having any gala points to be added to the event. The suggestion to skip the meal seems to be impractical since people travel from far off places and they have to be fed at least with a simple meal after a long ceremony.

Therefore, we request everyone not to cast any apprehensions on the celebration which will be more spirit filled than a worldly one. Let us not circulate anything that may undermine the dignity of the meaningful event which aims to begin a new chapter of a new shepherd to the diocese of Mangalore. Let us all, before and after the event, spend all our energies in reaching out to our afflicted in the flood areas and at the same time pray for the successful celebration of the Episcopal ordination.
